Week 2 - Psalm 121

I lift up my eyes to the mountains — where does my help come from?

My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth…

The Lord watches over you — the Lord is your shade at your right hand;

the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night…

The Lord will watch over your coming and going, both now and forevermore.

(Psalm 121: 1-2; 5-6; 8, NIV)

“You can learn to live carefree before God. He is most careful with you.”

(IPet 5:7 MSG)

There is something we all have in common. No matter who you are. No matter what you do or don’t do, at some point, in some way, we all need help.

When you need help, where do you look?

The Psalmist lifts up his eyes. He looks beyond himself. He looks beyond the people and things around him. His help comes from beyond the hills to the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.

We need to go to the source - the Maker. The Maker knows and understands what he made. He is aware of every part of it - every nook and cranny, every grand expanse. You can trust the Maker. With him, you are safe. With him, not a hair of your head will perish.

And the Lord is no ordinary Maker. Love emanates from God and is made known in Jesus. We know that God so loved the world and all that he made that he gave his one and only Son to save the world. God sent his Son to help us.

When you look at Psalm 121, you find the word watch or keep used six times. The Lord is going to keep a watchful eye on you. He will lovingly keep you in his care. He is going to help you.

The Lord watches attentively and personally over all he has made. He is not distracted or deterred. He will not slumber nor sleep. (v3) The Lord is right next to you, the shade at your right hand. (v5) And because the Lord is with you, the heat will not harm you. You will find protection and refreshment, like in the cool of the shade.

He will keep you in his care with an unfailing love that will not let you go. He will watch over your life (v7). He will watch over your coming and you going, both now and forevermore. (v8)

Reflect…

  1. Read Psalm 121. What do you hear God saying to you?

  2. What difference might it make to know that God, the Maker of heaven and earth, is your keeper - that He is lovingly watching over you?

  3. How do you need help right now? What difference might it make to go to God for help?
